S.P.E.C.I.A.L. is an acronym of Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck. These are the seven basic attributes of every character in the game. They are used to determine the skills and available perks of the given character.
Strength – Measures your character’s physical power. It determines how much equipment you can carry and whether you can effectively use weapons with minimum Strength requirements. Each point increases your Carry Weight, while insufficient Strength reduces your accuracy when using weapons that require more than your character possesses.
Gameplay Notes:
- Each point of Strength increases Carry Weight by 25 lbs. (or 15 lbs. when using the Small Frame trait).
- Using a weapon without meeting its minimum Strength requirement reduces accuracy by 20% for each missing Strength point.
Perception – Represents your character’s awareness of the world around them. A higher Perception can reveal additional dialogue options and helps your character detect danger from greater distances, providing more time to react during encounters.
Gameplay Notes:
- Higher Perception may unlock additional dialogue options in certain conversations.
- Determines how far your character starts from hostile enemies during random encounters.
- A greater starting distance can provide more time to prepare, reposition, or avoid danger before combat begins.
Endurance – Measures your character’s physical toughness and resilience. It affects your overall survivability by increasing your maximum Hit Points, improving resistance to environmental hazards, and enhancing your natural ability to recover from injuries. A higher Endurance also unlocks access to certain perks.
Gameplay Notes:
- Increases your base Hit Points (HP).
- Grants +2 Hit Points per level for each point of Endurance.
- Improves your natural Poison Resistance and Radiation Resistance.
- Determines how many Hit Points are recovered every 12 hours of in-game rest.
- Serves as a prerequisite for certain perks, including Toughness and Lifegiver.
Charisma – Represents your character’s social skills and personal presence. It influences your starting Speech and Barter skill levels, as well as the initial reactions of many non-player characters during conversations.
Gameplay Notes:
- Affects your starting Speech skill.
- Affects your starting Barter skill.
- Influences the initial reactions of many non-player characters (NPCs).
- Has a relatively limited impact on gameplay compared to several other S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes.
Intelligence – Measures your character’s mental aptitude and problem-solving ability. It determines how many skill points you gain when leveling up, influences several knowledge-based skills, and unlocks additional dialogue options throughout the game. A higher Intelligence provides greater flexibility when developing your character.
Gameplay Notes:
- Determines the number of skill points gained at each level using the formula: 5 + (Intelligence × 2).
- Influences the starting values of several knowledge-based skills, including Science, Repair, and First Aid.
- Higher Intelligence unlocks additional dialogue options and complex Speech checks.
- Characters with Intelligence below 4 enter a unique “low-INT” dialogue mode, replacing many standard responses with simple, disjointed speech and triggering special reactions from certain NPCs.
- Many players recommend an Intelligence of 7 or higher to maximize skill point gains and character development.
Agility – Measures your character’s speed, coordination, and reflexes. It is one of the most important attributes for combat, determining how many actions you can perform each turn while also improving your ability to dodge attacks, act before enemies, and excel with several combat-related skills.
Gameplay Notes:
- Determines your Action Points (AP) using the formula: 5 + (Agility ÷ 2).
- Action Points are used for combat actions such as moving, attacking, reloading, and using items.
- Improves your Armor Class (AC), increasing your chance to avoid enemy attacks.
- Determines your Sequence, which affects turn order at the start of combat.
- Increases the starting values of Small Guns, Sneak, and Throwing.
- Serves as a prerequisite for several powerful perks, including Action Boy and Bonus Rate of Fire.
Luck – Represents your character’s fortune and influences many of the game’s random events. It affects your chance to land critical hits, avoid critical failures, encounter special events, and qualify for several powerful perks. A higher Luck can dramatically change how events unfold throughout your adventure.
Gameplay Notes:
- Your base Critical Hit chance is equal to your Luck score (for example, 6 Luck = 6% base Critical Hit chance).
- Higher Luck reduces the likelihood of Critical Failures, such as dropping a weapon, striking an ally, or causing a weapon to malfunction.
- Increases the chance of encountering special random events while traveling on the world map.
- Serves as a prerequisite for several powerful perks, including Better Criticals, More Criticals, and Toughness.
